CRRRaSh! 293 Radio Silence

Happy Nearly Christmas

Happy nearly Christmas and also happy Winter Solstice, which is today.

I'm not as miserable as the last few Christmas's, despite my usual online semi-pretence of the opposite, due to a Christmas dinner invitation. I can't make it, but it made me happy not to have been forgotten.

Am I ready for Christmas? Sort of.

Radio Silence

I'm excited to see Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but I would have been even more excited had I been able to see the last of the Skywalker saga, with the person who took me to see the first film—my mother. Unfortunately, she's out of reach until March. If I can't see the film with her, then I want to savour and enjoy the experience when the cinemas are less crammed.

I'm also not keen to compete with all the other rabid big news outlets and other podcasters, who are jamming ethersphere right now.

Of course, the problem with this is avoiding all the spoilers. I think the last trailer I saw was a month ago, and since then I have been avoiding all mention of episode nine.

Missed

Damnit, I missed seeing Motherless Brooklyn at the cinema. As someone with Tourette's Syndrome I have watched the trailers with both eagerness and cynicism, but I have been hearing good things about the 50s hard-boiled/pulp/noir—a setting I greatly enjoy.

The Dead Center

Shane Carruth's 2019 acting swansong in this low budget horror about a patient who is infected with something very nasty indeed. Carruth is the maverick shrink trying to decode the memory of a John Doe.

Freaks

Unstable dad prevents daughter leaving a rundown house in this 2018 Sci-Fi cleverly handled like Stephen King horror.

Nancy Drew

The cast is too old for this uncomfortable sexed up latest TV adaptation from The CW, of what was originally the adventures of a 16 year old teen sleuth from a series of early 20th century detective novels. It comes across as an inferior Veronica Mars.

I used to have an inordinate trouble remembering the title to the crossover show The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries (1977 to 1979) and once recalled it as Drew and the Nancy Boys.

Rick and Morty

More of the same demented Marty and Doc parody. Season four isn't as funny as previous seasons.

Secret City

2016 and 2019 continuing Australian spy thriller that I watched largely because it stared Fringe and Mindhunter's Anna Torv. I stayed watching longer than I should because I was hoping it would be in the league of Australian hacking thriller The Code which we talked about back in 2014. Centred in within the political machinations of Australia's capital in Canberra, season one is nearly as good as The Code, season two is not.

Black Hole Follow Up

I might be a black hole spotter. I have mentioned, talked about, and been awed by black holes with a surprising regularity. Listen to episodes 121, 222, 256, 282, and 292.
