Happy Holi

Today is the Hindu festival of colours, so happy Holi.

RIP George Segal

RIP George Segal who died recently.

I remember him most from The Hot Rock and King Rat, though his film career was prolific.

Incidentally, if you're into crime fiction, read any of Donald E. Westlake's humorous Dortmunder series, that includes The Hot Rock, or the hardboiled Parker series (name changed to Walker in the great Lee Marvin films).

The Beano

The Beano was the second comic I read as a child, after getting hooked on The Dandy.

Every week during the lockdown, I buy a couple of newspapers and a magazine each for my mum and dad. Mum reads i and a random mag, like Vogue, Cosmopolitan, or a computer magazine, and Dad the Daily Mirror and Private Eye. This keeps them in the loop (after years of being right out of the loop).

On my last trip I bought Mum a Beano on a whim and she seems to be getting into comics! I am really pleased that she also likes Roger the Dodger, who, along with Billy Whizz, are some of my favourite Beano characters. I also told her about 2000ad related Monster and Misty trades and she's interested.

Zack Snyder's Justice League

I swore I wouldn't watch this, because I hated both it and its predecessor, though I did like Man of Steel (2013), the first in the series. But it was something to do on a day when I really didn't feel like doing much.

The 2021 director's cut is better and more coherent than the original 2017 film, but then you'd hope so given its extremely long running time.

However, its opening confused me because it's been such a long time since I saw Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016). Much as I hate that film, I wish I had because this movie starts where that one ended and I can barely remember that far back.

The aspect ratio change didn't seem to make any sense, but did not bother me unduly as I grew up with 4:3 television.

If I hated the original, why watch this? It's still a film about superheroes and I needed something to take my mind off some hearing problems I woke up with this morning. I saw Sound of Metal recently and, as an avid consumer and creator of content, I have a phobia of loss of senses, and this film largely distracted me from those fears. Largely? Cyborg.

Wherefore Art Thou Weng?

I owe you Doctor Who: The Talons of Weng-Chiang and that is coming. I have not forgotten.
