CRRRaSh! 410 Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween

This is a bonus episode, just for Halloween. Happy Halloween nerdlings!

Despite what you are about to hear, I am not entirely crushed by life. Though I am making the best of things, after a mind-bombing on Friday.

I ate pie, therefore I am. Mm... savoury pumpkin pie. I'm in the midst of watching the Fear Street Trilogy. Horror and pie abounds in the night and all is well.

In a Wizardly Huff

The title of this item is not a drug reference, my American friends, but a Britishism for "sulk". What can I say, I'm a splainer.

I've had another bad couple of days. When I'm like that, I'm unpleasant to be around, and also find other people unpleasant to be around.

I completed the online NHS depression test and passed with flying colours. My scores were 21/24 for depression and 24/24 for anxiety. The app recommended that I seek medical help, which, of course, I did not do, because from long experience, I know that there isn't any. Well, alright, there are two choices: call someone with zero medical training on 111 or see your GP. Have you tried booking an appointment lately, or even not so lately? Even before the pandemic, appointments were exceedingly hard to come by.

Message to friend of the show, Mr STW: turns out you were right, though a few weeks early. Time... what is one to do with twisty, turny time?

Good times.

Irony aside, I'm working through this.

If you are in the same position as me, I won't say anything as trite as, "hang in there", because doing that would be bullshit. Although I made the decision to work things out on my own this time (because I've ridden this merry-go-round many times), please actually do try to seek help quickly. Do not tough, man, or weather it out. You can't out-macho this. If you are in the UK, leave a callback message for SANEline on 07984 967 708 or call the Samaritans on 116 123.

Tourette's Pickle

Because of the medical-grade sulk I'm currently contending with, my Tourette's went a little berserk.

That left me the choice of rendering myself comatose with clonidine, or---. Well, there's no "or", there is no other choice, no other treatment I've been offered.

That's a problem because I need caffeine to function generally, so the last thing I'd take is something that leaves me dopey.

The Batman

I already disparaged Colin Farell's portrayal of Penguin in the trailer for the upcoming Battinson, but I'm not quite finished. Why is it that Farrell's Italian American mafioso is a cut-rate Al Capone? There were other ways to go.

Even Danny Devito, who is actually Italian American, didn't do the easy cliche in his demented freak version of Penguin in Tim Burton's Batman Returns (1992).

I miss Burgess Meredith's Penguin unique, sleek take from the old Adam West show.

Strange tangential trivia: my love of umbrellas is because of Penguin and Steed from the Avengers. Because of that, I have always owned a posh walking stick-type umbrella since my teens. I probably deserved to be mocked for that.

Succession

Numerous American podcasters have recommended this show, so I gave it a try... and lasted three episodes.

The show is about a Maxwell/Murdoch-like character, playing off his back-biting, repulsive spawn against one other, in a bid to find an heir to his media empire.

I like Brian Cox (the moghul) in anything, and this show is good, but the dark comedy is not that dark or that funny, and the show is too soapy for my taste. I gratefully ended my brief trip to vanillaville and escaped on the last train back to nerdville.

Edgar Allan Poe TV Show

There's an Edgar Allan Poe show coming from the director of horror TV series Midgnight Mass.

While I have not seen Midgnight Mass, yet, I have heard good things about it. However, I am greatly excited by the prospect of an Edgar Allan Poe TV series because I am such a fan of his work.

New Iron Maiden and ACDC Albums and Tours

Iron Maiden and AC/DC have new albums; Powerup (2020) by AC/DC and Senjutsu by Iron Maiden (2021), and are touring in 2022.

The usual story-telling epicness, backed up by Steve Harris's classic galloping bass can be heard in the song Stratego.

AC/DC's delightfully bluesy hard rock proves they've still got it and are appealing to fans' nostalgia with the video Through The Mists Of Time. I also really like Witch's Spell.

It makes me want to stock/re-stock myself with a few key older albums, like Iron Maiden's The Number of the Beast and Somewhere in Time. I already had AC/DC's Highway to Hell on cassette back in the 80s, and recently bought the CD, though the vinyl would be a nice addition.

Cascade Error Headphone Fun

I accidentally threw a can of pop onto my bed, with one leg still trailing a trouser-leg; panicked, grabbed a towel, launched myself at the puddle, and landed, knee-first, directly on my headphones; instantly destroying them.

I still have not found better cans, so I immediately reordered the discontinued JVC HA-S160 Flats.

Recommendations please, for really good closed back mastering headphones, with large ear cups to cradle my long elf ears.

Show Notes and Blog Posts

They are back because, not only am I insane, but because Google doesn't do audio search. How crap is that? Also, because I have a lot of content---show notes, blog posts, etc.---it would be a pity to hide it all.

The other reason is that, without the discipline of writing well-formatted text, I can't read my own show notes.

Bear in mind, this is a work-in-progress and many links may not work for a while.

Doctor Who Revisit

New Who Doctor Who is back with episode 1 of series 13: The Halloween Apocalypse. I don't have much to say about it, except it's back and I'm happy.

As for Old Who, yes, yes, yes! My ongoing, never-ending, everlasting---so help me, god---vintage Doctor Who revisit is back this week!
