CRRRaSh! 423 Only in Cinemas

Only in Cinemas

We put The Matrix Resurrections to bed in pod 422, but why were we so late reviewing it? Because for some insane and suicidal lemming-like reasoning, movie studios were, and are, still stubbornly saying, "Only in Cinemas".

Tell me, are you keen to rush out to see The King's Man? Pandemic? Highly infectious Omicron variant? Anyone? Anyone? Morons.

Army of Thieves

The Army of the Dead prequel, is the backstory of ace cracksman, Ludwig/Sebastian, starring and directed by Matthias Schweighofer.

This is a very conventional heist movie about safe cracking, but what is very not conventional, or rather is very strange, is that the very gay Ludwig of Army of the Dead is now very heterosexual. What the hell happened? Was actor/director Matthias, straight in real-life, uncomfortable with the role he had been cast in, in the previous movie, and decided to retcon the character? I am not a gay man, but my gaydar is slightly better attuned than most, having lived in Downtown Vancouver for years, and this de-gaying made me squirm.

B: The Beginning

This Netflix anime is crazy, even for anime. This isn't what I was expecting. From the trailers I was expecting atmospheric neo-noir, but I got this madness instead.

There are are serial killers, a winged, superpowered serial killer of serial killers, terrorists, sci-fi weaponry; all set in a quaint fictional Eurasian country. The case is so bizarre, it requires the return of an eccentric Inspector Morse-type detective called Keith Flick. "Flic" is French slang for cop. Hahaha.

In Phase XLR-to-TRS Cables

Mono XLR-to-TRS stereo 3.5mm mini-jack cables can be the bane of your life if you record into a digital recorder with no XLR ports, because most of these stupid cables are wired wrong.

Short explanation: wrongly wired cables mean phase cancellation when you import into a DAW and then try to combine the signal. There are idiotic workarounds---e.g. ditching one channel---but the real solution is to get the right cable.

Years ago, I bought the right cable for my Sony PCM-M10, it broke, so I bought another which was wrongly wired. I fixed the issue recently by purchasing a "Hosa Technology Microphone Cable, XLR3F to Right-angle 3.5 mm TRS" online.

Podcasting Gear Update

Studio: Shure SM7B microphone, Elgato Wave Boom Arm (High), TritonAudio FetHead mic booster, Yamaha MG06 mixer. Travel: Audio Technica AT875R, Sony PCM M10, aluminium flight case (get a case with a prop stand to prevent fingers and gear getting crushed). Plus, a variety of stands, tripods, pistol grips, foam and furry windshields, and even more, though less frequently used, mics; SM58 and XM8500, etc.

My signal chain is analogue, because my only experience with USB mic was a noisy ground loop disaster of a USB mic from Maplins that ended in me buying and sticking with the MG06, as opposed to something like the Scarlett Focusrite 2i2 USB interface. Once bitten, etc. Maybe Scarlett is great, but my current chain is a driverless, platformless hardware agnostic paradise.

I'll talk you that setup briefly in the podcast, though I've covered most of this before. You can find a more detailed walkthrough of gear and process here.

Things I would like, but haven't got? The DBX 286s is the budget vocal processor of streamers who don't have the luxury of post-production. I don't stream, so I returned it to save some money. My very budget-priced JVC S160 headphones are great---I have used that model for about 20 years---but they are hardly studio-grade. These must be replaced soon, with either monitors, e.g. Sony HS5? Or decent cans, e.g. Sennheiser HD600? Other things? I'd like better organisation, e.g. a c. 6U rack system. If my PCM M10 ever dies, I'd consider a Sound Devices MixPre-3. Most importantly, and long, long overdue, is a new computer!
