CRRRRS 572 The Devil's Workshop

By Roy Mathur, on 2025-03-18, at 23:32:25 to 00:02:42 GMT, for Captain Roy's Rusty Rocket Radio Show

My Wizard's Staff

My staff is a dry, old sapling (the word I couldn't recall last time) from a remarkably recalcitrant, mattock-resistant shrub.

Judge Dredd, Dredd

The only reason I've been rewatching these is because of my increased obsession with biking, since my health (and the weather) improved. It is ironically funny, given how different our bikes are.

In the comics and films, Dredd rides a Lawmaster. Designed originally by artist Carlos, the stupidly powerful machine comes with cannon, laser, multi-spectral scanning, on-board AI, and occasionally can even fly.

On the other hand, my bike is a comically tiny 125cc with teeny wheels. The only things in common are that both have proportionally enormous tyres and carry a fairly big bloke, massively encased in body armour. ATGATT.

Civil War

In the midst of a contemporary America civil war, war photography Kirsten Dunst takes younger photographer under her wing as they head towards a final confrontation at the White House in this 2024 dystopian thriller.

A depressing and violent film about a disillusioned photographer and her colleagues suffering terrible casualties as they go about documenting a tripartite internecine war. Coming out before Trump took office, although only a year old, it already looks dated in the light of more improbable events.

Beast

At one point, Idris Elba takes on a CGI'd to the Nth degree lion armed only with a small knife (no, I'm not joking). A 2022 nice sunny safari tale of rich widowed doctor re-connecting with estranged daughters, until poachers set off a vengeful lion on a Jaws-like killing spree. Tripe.

Invincible

I've finished the 3rd season. What I said in 570 stands. I enjoy the Marvel and DC references and homages, but I'm turned off by the gore. The sheer misery of the story is a bit much too, but it's TWD's Kirkman's, so what did I expect?

At the wrap, we're left with a cliffhanger. Following Angstrom destroying half the world with his Alt-Marks and our Mark finally head butting Conquer until his head explodes, we await the next Viltrum onslaught. Oh joy.

Common Side Effects

Marshall is hallucinating the little guy and so are some others, then he takes a fatal tumble. Will he eat a blue mushroom in time, or is it curtains for the mycologist?

Daredevil: Born Again

Daredevil gets more involved in the Marvel universe this season. He meets White Tiger, Punisher, Ms Marvel's dad, and he fights Muse. Kingpin meets Hawkeye's Swordsman and we finally resolve the mystery of his raw knuckles.

If I have one criticism, it's that Born Again leans too heavily into legal drama, at least until Matt begins to don the mask again, which is what I tune in for.

More Wrenching

Bike wrenching first. I ACF 50'd the bike---a really messy and time-consuming job---I wish those cheapskates Honda rustproofed their bikes in the factory. Now, I've noticed the chain is loose. What a pain with only 350 miles on the clock. I don't mind the odd bit of DIY, but I bought the bike to ride, not spanner.

And now literal wrenching. I wrenched my left elbow falling from a ladder trimming a shrub, then dazzled myself and started getting twinges of migraine again.

I have a million other tasks to do, so every day is full, but it is difficult as I am almost irredeemably out of shape, since the last migraine attack deprived me of my monthly 10km+ walk around London. I have to get in shape because, well, not only to meet Sandy, but because I have so much to do and I also don't miss social, professional, and recreational opportunities. To sum up, getting old sucks.

Audio Tweak

I said I'd increase the clarity of some previous pods, but it's too much hard work and besides, they aren't terrible, so I've left them as is.

However, this and the last episode should sound a little clearer as I've cut a little from the low end. That is what I used to do before suddenly going mad for a few episodes by faffing with my gear and settings. "Idle hands are the devil's workshop". Sorry about that.

Varied Content, Wrong Hat for this Weather, Dressing Like a Wizard

Other ad lib topics were added as I went off on tangents increasingly unrelated to any semblance of normality.
